Together, they do three things: they seal the roofline against weather and pests, they provide the primary ventilation pathway into your attic, and they give the roofline a finished appearance that most homeowners take completely for granted.
By the time soffit and fascia damage is visible from the driveway, the rot has usually already moved past the board itself. It's working through the structure behind it. That changes the repair scope significantly, which is why early assessment matters more than most people expect.

The sequence plays out consistently across LA rooflines. The gutter fills with eucalyptus debris, common in Silver Lake, Los Feliz, and the foothills, and water backs up against the fascia face. It doesn't take a major overflow event. It takes two or three rainy seasons of low-level contact.
The wood rot progression begins as discoloration. You might see paint bubbling or a dark stain along the gutter line. A few seasons later, the board softens. Press it with a screwdriver and it gives. Pest entry through soffits shows up differently than rot. Look for small circular or irregular penetrations near the eave edge, displaced insulation visible from below, or unusual sounds near the roofline at dawn or dusk. These don't always correlate with visible rot. A perfectly painted soffit panel can still be structurally compromised if water has reached the back face.
The third failure mode is the quietest, and the most consequential for the roof above.
Soffit ventilation works through perforated panels or individual vent inserts spaced along the eave. These serve the intake side of your attic's air exchange system. The building-code-required soffit ventilation ratio, the balance between intake air from soffit vents and exhaust air from ridge or gable vents, keeps attic temperatures controlled. When soffits are replaced without restoring vent continuity, the intake side of the system fails. Prior paint-overs that seal the perforations have the same effect. Implementation
