Three Ways an Existing Gutter System Fails in Los Angeles
Most LA gutters fail quietly, over months, before a single drop enters the house.
Here's what nine months of dry weather actually does to a gutter system. Eucalyptus seeds and leaf matter compact into a dense, moisture-retaining mat at the base of every run. That mat doesn't just block water, it holds humidity against the back of the gutter and against the fascia board behind it. By the time the first storm of the season arrives, the system isn't just clogged. It's been slowly rotting the wood it was installed to protect.
Three failure modes account for almost every gutter call we see across Los Angeles.
Clogs and standing water
A gutter clog at the downspout outlet is invisible from the ground until water spills over the front edge during rain. More damaging is a downspout clog, a blockage inside the vertical pipe, often compressed debris or nesting material, where the backup stays hidden until it overflows at the gutter outlet and saturates the fascia board in a concentrated stream.
Pitch loss and sagging
Gutter sagging, the downward deflection of a gutter run caused by hanger failure, water weight, or debris accumulation, creates sections that hold standing water permanently. That water doesn't drain after rain stops. It oxidizes the aluminum, invites mosquito breeding, and keeps the fascia board damp between storms.
Joint and end cap leaks
End cap resealing, the reapplication of roofing-grade sealant at the capped terminus of each gutter run, becomes necessary every few years in LA. UV exposure dries out standard caulk fast. End caps are the most common joint failure point and the first place a gutter will leak when sealant desiccates under Southern California sun.

Most homeowners don't realize that water spilling over the edge during rain isn't always a clog. It could be a pitch problem. That distinction changes the repair completely.
On many service calls across Los Angeles, the homeowner assumes a clog because water overflows at the same spot every storm. After clearing the debris and checking the run with a level, the real issue is clear: a hanger that failed left a three-inch sag. Water backs up at the low point and spills, every single time, clog or no clog.

Usually a sag or pitch problem. The low point is holding water and the run fills before the storm ends.
Water overflowing at the corner or end cap
Usually an end cap or joint seal failure. Water drips directly behind the gutter, not in front of it.
Standing water after rain, no overflow
A pitch problem that hasn't created overflow yet. Gutter spike vs. hidden hanger failure is the typical cause. Older LA homes were built with spike-and-ferrule systems that pull out as fascia wood dries and contracts. A gutter that drains after a storm can still hold a quarter inch of standing water, and that quarter inch is a problem.
When Los Angeles Roofing Masters clears and inspects a gutter system, the crew checks the pitch of every run with a level. Not an eyeballed estimate. A level.
The reason is specific to this climate. In a high-rain region, standing water in gutters, water that remains in a gutter run after rainfall has stopped, evaporates within a day. In Los Angeles, where rain is rare and UV is intense, that quarter inch sits for days, sometimes a week. It accelerates aluminum oxidation at the low point, keeps the adjacent fascia board from drying, and creates the conditions that allow mosquito populations to establish.
The standard for correct gutter pitch is a quarter inch of drop per ten feet of run. We set every run to that standard. If the hanger system can't hold that pitch, common on older homes where fascia water intrusion has degraded the wood behind the gutter, we address the fascia before reinstalling the gutter. That's not an add-on. It's the only way the repair holds.
