Sizing
Every other decision depends on it. K-style gutters hold more volume per foot than a half-round of the same width, making them the better functional choice for most LA properties. Half-round fits Spanish Revival and Craftsman homes where architecture matters, but requires sizing up to six inches.
Slope (Pitch)
The deliberate angle built into every run: 1/16 inch of drop per linear foot toward the downspout. That sounds like almost nothing. It is almost nothing. But without it, water pools mid-run and speeds up fascia decay. Incorrect pitch is the leading cause of gutter failure in LA.
Material
Seamless aluminum in .032 gauge is the standard across the LA basin, eliminating seam-joint failure points. Copper is a genuine upgrade for high-value homes, lasting fifty years or more in a non-freeze climate. Vinyl is not recommended, UV degradation shortens its life here significantly.
Downspout Placement Closes the Loop
A downspout is only useful if it exits water away from the foundation. In LA's clay-heavy soils, water pooling within two or three feet of a slab can create hydrostatic pressure that contributes to foundation movement over time.
Downspout extensions and splash blocks redirect flow to grade. On hardscaped properties, underground discharge is sometimes the right answer. Placement decisions happen at the installation stage, not as an afterthought.
